These are the powerful words of Acacia L. Slaton in her spiritual guide, ‘Launch Out Into the Deep!’ In it, the author challenges her readers to live their faith openly and deeply, committing their lives to their Saviour and letting him work his miracles in their lives.

She addresses the struggles we all face and gives anecdotal, personal and Biblical references to others who have come through similar trials with the Grace of God.

At the end of each chapter, Slaton provides a corresponding Scripture passage and Words of the Wise. Many chapters also include inspirational poems written by Slaton’s brother, Aaron, and illustrations by Nick Seluk.
‘Launch Out Into the Deep!’ does not shy away from hard-hitting truths. Slaton addresses sexual immorality, the perils of fame and the impact of the media on our society, the influence of evil and a lack of commitment to Christ.

While Slaton openly discusses her Christian beliefs, she also warns others who profess to share her religion not to get caught in a trap of hypocrisy and doubt. She acknowledges that no one is perfect and that we all need to work towards living the lives God intended for us. She says it won’t always be easy, but behind every trial we undergo, there is a lesson to be learned.

Although Slaton’s personal illustrations were profound, I particularly enjoyed the parts of the book where she explored the Biblical passages about the woman at the well, Ruth, David and his offspring, Jacob and his wives and Hannah. The familiar stories suddenly took on a new light. She made them relatable to the modern world and pointed out aspects that I had never thought of before. For that reason alone, I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to renew their faith and personal relationship with God.

While managing not to be overbearing or preachy, Slaton conveys an aspect of Christianity that is all-too-often ignored: “asking for forgiveness does not excuse your sin against God. True repentance is confessing your faults, asking God to forgive you, and turning from your sins. It’s not saying you’re sorry and the next month committing the same sin. This is not true repentance.”
