Reg McKay is used to tackling Glasgow’s meanest streets for he worked as a social worker there for many years. However in 1998 McKay could no longer take the grey-faced men in grey suits anymore and so he left to retire to writing. He is recognized as a widely published investigative journalist who has been a crime columnist for Daily Record, a crime consultant for News of the World and is the author of ten best-selling books. His latest offering, Dancing with Death, is sure to be well received.
It is the 1960s in Glasgow and within the hearts of woman living in that city, is fear. Fear of Bible John - a ruthless killer who has claimed his first female victim.
He seems to relish in provoking terror on the people of Glasgow and through his own words says: “the people will know me as John. And they will fear me.”
This chilling book is told through John’s diary. It is truly frightening to read and to see the bitter hatred towards many women this serial killer has.
He goes on to murder many other women who retreat to the dance halls unaware they could be dancing with the devil.
Ruth is mentioned in this book too. She is an obsessed psychologist who is determined to rid this city of its killer. But the question is how? There are many Bible John look-a-likes and time is ticking to find the real culprit.
The more I read the more scared I became. I’m pretty thankful I wasn’t a young woman living in this area in the 60s and having to constantly live in fear that the next day might possibly be my last. How must it have felt to walk through the dark streets, thinking every time a shadow moved it could be the strangler? To be dancing in the hall and thinking “am I dancing with death?”
Lines in this book jump out at you and send shivers down your spine: “the scream echoed through the black of night - one howling, piercing, agonised scream. A woman was in serious trouble but no one - almost no one - was listening.”
These words conjure up a sense of bewilderment and dread, a sense of hopelessness. Do you dare to read on? Do you dare to uncover the truth hidden within these pages and feel the anger, hatred and greed of a serial killer otherwise known as “strangler” who got his kicks from sexually abusing and tormenting women?
This book should appeal to those of you who like your crime reads or to anyone who is interested in the story of Bible John who may even be alive to this day.
