If you are interested in a diatribe, with some humour thrown in, pertaining to many of the ills of the USA, then
Michael Moore’s, Stupid White Men should satisfy your appetite.
Best known for his TV series TV Nation and his documentary Roger and Me, Moore is, to put it mildly, a “ramble rouser.”
He is not afraid to sound off about government, corporate America, student apathy, law enforcement agencies, firearms, or anything else that may be on his mind.
In the opening chapter of Stupid White Men, Moore calls George W. Bush’s winning of the election “A Very American Coup.”
According to Moore, Al Gore is the elected President of the United States, as he received 539, 898 more votes that George W. Bush. The latter roams the country “without purpose or mission, surfacing only to lecture college students and replenish his state of Little Debbie’s Snack Cakes.”
To support his argument, Moore shows how the coup began long before the shenanigans on Election Day.
Among his evidence was Bush’s presidential co-chairwoman Katherine Harris, who was also the Florida secretary of state in charge of elections, recruiting Database Technologies, at a cost of taxpayers’ money to the tune of four million dollars, to go through Florida’s voter rolls and remove anyone “suspected” of being a former felon.
The law states that ex-felons cannot vote in Florida. The result was that 31 percent of African Americans in Florida are prohibited from voting, because their records show that they are ex-felons.
Jeb, George and Katherine certainly were aware that African Americans, as shown by the subsequent results, voted overwhelmingly for Al Gore.
Moore does not leave Corporate America off the hook. Did you know that first year pilots employed by American Eagle, the commuter airline of American airlines, earn $16, 800.00 a year.
Think about this the next time you fly. Would you like to have someone flying an aircraft that is barely able to pay his bills, or perhaps he can’t pay his bills?
He does, however, receive complimentary air travel to places he can ill afford!
As Moore states: “we live in a society that rewards and honors corporate gangsters-corporate leaders who directly and indirectly plunder the earth’s resources and look out for the shareholder’s profits, above all else-while subjecting the poor to a random and brutal system of justice.’’
Forty five million Americans have no health coverage, and the minimum wage remains unchanged for several years at $5.15 an hour.
Although much of what Moore hollers about makes sense and serves as a wake up call, many of his solutions are too simplistic, and at times naďve.
In certain instances, when discussing the problems of the Middle East, he seems to be out of his league in understanding all of the nuances of this complex issue.
Unfortunately, democracies are not always perfect, however, at least we have the opportunity to vent our frustrations in public without fear.
Stupid White Men is a prime example of the freedom of speech we enjoy in a democracy.
