Baminals by bestselling author Scott Simpson, is a right laugh. It is packed with all creatures that anyone who is familiar or loves anything Scottish will surely recognize. “Baninals” may not be nice creatures but they are fascinating!

The Crabbit is a well recognized creature, even if you are not native to the land of the brave. It is perhaps the only member of the “baminal kingdom” that is always in a bad mood and continues to remain in a state of ill-temper. Crabbits are described by Simpson as a beast who will find fault in almost everything. They cannot bear the sound of children’s laughter and will often lurk behind their curtains for days on end.

Remind you of anyone you know? I rather liken these beings to grumpy old men!

The Chore does rather remind me of those burglars who manage to steal your car keys from under your nose and take off with your car. They are sneaky and can liberate everything from a packet of batteries to a 52 inch plasma-screen television and go on to sell it at a fraction of the cost. The funny cartoonist-drawing beside the description made me laugh, just remember to keep your eye on your DVD player!

The Clart, I’m afraid I only have one word for this monstrous being - eww. The story goes that the Clart visited the doctors and when asked to provide urine, stool and semen samples, this ugly creature just whipped off his underpants and said “I’ll be back for them tomorrow.”

With a mind as dirty as his appearance, you will love to hate this little guy.

Puffins are some more “baminals” that are featured inside. Simpson says they are remarkable creatures that have adapted to their environment in no time. Since the smoking ban however, they have been forced to take refuge outside but thankfully have long woolly coats to protect them from the Scottish chills.  You really should read about them and see the fantastic picture.

Learn what exactly a “choob” is and prepare to be quite sick. I know I was.

This is a picture-book which is clearly aimed at the adult audience.

Each page is as fascinating as the last even if these beings are just plain disgusting.

A really enjoyable read though and the illustrations are just laugh-out-loud funny…oh and gross. I loved this.
