Louis Garafalo’s The Sassamon Circle is adventure fiction at its very best. His characters have a reality that jumps right off the pages. You can almost feel the emotions running high as the tensions between the settlers of the New World and the Native American Indians become more strained with each passing day.
John Sassamon, a native American, tries to reap the rewards of both worlds as he becomes schooled in several languages—including English—and makes himself, or so he thinks, indispensable to all groups living in the mid-sixteen hundred’s New England area.
While he was able to smoothly interact with the English and the different groups of Indians, it became more and more apparent that he was actually a man that fit well with neither culture. He became an object of suspicion and mistrust by all.
One family, the Laphams, have carved a niche in the New England countryside and amassed a sizable wealth by building a sawmill on the waterfall near the town of Middleborough.Twelve years earlier Leroy Lapham had the insight to see a future in the woodworking industry that would feed the housing needs of the growing town.
Leroy’s son, Charles, a confident individual and driving force behind the family business had his own private agenda for creating products of varying use.In a secret room of the sawmill which he kept locked at all times, he worked on his private creations.
As tensions grew between the Indians and the English, several murders occurred by unknown individuals and were ultimately blamed on the Indians, causing a feud of sorts to break out between the two groups.War was inevitable and soon became the unraveling of a once peaceful community.John Sassamon’s own murder leaves unanswered questions on both sides of the warring factions.Brothers and fathers of both cultures die as each side seeks revenge for hurts brought by the other.
Mr. Garafalo takes you back in time to a place in history where a great sadness is felt as two peoples destroy a heritage that should have spanned the ages. You will want to read this tale that brings realism to the hardships of our fore fathers, both native and immigrant. It’s a definite page-turner that you won’t want to put down until you’ve reached the conclusion.
