Headless Body in Topless Bar - the name of this book is so funny yet eye-catching! I read this title and I wanted to read on. Basically this is a collection of the best, most bizarre headlines to have been printed by The New York Post in the last few decades.
Captions from “May the curse be with you” to “Wii regret to deform you” are so witty and clever it is clear to see why many people enjoy the New York Post on a regular basis.
One of my favourites is “Ear, Ear”. I think this is a direct remark at the fate of Mike Tyson - you know, he was the boxer who bit off Evander Holyfield's ear. Nasty stuff but great play on words!
If you are drawn into this book just by this title - read the material for yourself. I found it very clever because the headline really fitted the event. What do you get when you have a mad gunman and a Bronx strip club? A headless body in a topless bar!! Brilliant.
“Jurassic Pork” - a catchphrase that is fitting to the accompanying picture of a young boy holding a gun (is it a real one?) over a huge hog. I can see why many would think this funny but to me I thought it was distasteful. That poor animal!
“Plague on your mouses” - a little section in the newspaper about rodents that carry the plague. It says that if you are bitten by the flea from the infested animal you are likely to die if you don’t receive antibiotics in time. Ooh quite scary. This is almost like the Pied -Piper tale all over again…
If you like your celebrity stories read the Celebrities section. A story most will remember - that of Gwyneth Paltrow and Brad Pitt and their split. An accurate caption says “It’s the pitts!” a phrase I see quite a lot in celebrity magazines - oviously adopted from NYP.
Really, this is such an excellent book with headlines from 30-35 years ago. They make you think, smile and sometimes laugh.
If you regard yourself a news junkie or just like reading funny headlines then I’d definitely invest in this. A great cover too which is made to look like the newspaper itself - again how witty! I’ll put this one with my pop-cultural collection…maybe you should too?
