Cheryl and Bill Jamison are the authors of more then a dozen cookbooks and travel guides. Appearing regularly on television, they are frequent contributors to publications including Cooking Light and Bon Appetit.
They reside just outside of Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Cheryl and partner Bill Jamison have done what most can only dream - that is to travel to ten different countries and taste eight hundred dinners!
This humorous and light-hearted travel book should amuse and interest all those who have ever thought “I wonder what it would be like to taste…,”
From Bali to Brazil, they possibly savoured all the different foods the cultures had to offer.
The appetizer they start off with in Bali is a “soothing potato soup with a coconut milk base”. Delicious I have no doubt - the very sound of it makes my mouth water. They then go on to devour the main course and a desert that consists of fresh tropical fruit cubes in a yoghurt and coconut milk mixture. Is this what they serve in Bali? If so, get me a plane ticket!
I rather liked the fact that at the end of every chapter (and country) the authors provide alist of restaurants that are there for you to try at the places they’ve visited. Very useful if you are serious about travelling to these destination/s and want to know which is the best restaurant for you. Also included is a recipe for a meal that is associated with the location of the trip. I am inclined to test out these recipes for myself and give mealtimes a taste of the exotic.
However I can’t say I would be inclined to try out some of the Thai dishes that poor Cheryl and Bill tasted. Dishes flavoured with ground water beetles doesn’t appeal to my appetite and nor does the idea of cooking with any other insect or lizards (“food” locals will apparently shop for).
India is a country renowned for its food and after reading this next chapter I’m not surprised. The dishes sound amazing and simply mouth-watering. From tandoori salmon marinated in a spice paste and moistened with sugar cane vinegar to a griddle-cooked shrimp with toasted ground coriander seeds and Kashmiri chillies, these are all the delights that Cheryl and Bill got to taste. How I wish I had been there.
Obviously these are not the only countries the authors visit during their round the world feast. They take a trip to Australia and discover the world’s best breakfast sandwich and jet to China where they savour crispy lamb ribs served on a section of banana leaf.
After reading this book it does make you feel very bored with your usual meals. I have to admit pizza or chips do not quite cover it when it comes to mealtimes now. I think I shall try my hand at cooking some of the mentioned recipes.
An unforgettable and delightful account of the Jamison’s three-month food tasting odyssey around the globe. Definitely worth a read for cooks and adventurers alike.
