If there were a true medical bible, Steven Levenkron’s name would be listed as an authority on treating patients who suffer from sexual abuse. Since there is no such work, “Stolen Tomorrows” is where we need to turn in understanding the many faces and ramifications of this ever-increasing problem in the world.

The events that Levenkron reveals in “Stolen Moments are real. The 17 cases allow us a clearer understanding of how sexual abuse can cause various responses from the victims. Depression, trauma baggage, anorexia, bulimia, self-mutilation, alcohol and other substance abuse, illnesses, anxiety, and an overwhelming sense of low self-esteem have all been linked to sexual abuse. When abused as a child, the nightmare seems to have no end. If not dealt with and control taken back by the victim, with the therapeutic assistance by an expert, the monsters of childhood haunt the adult.  The longer between the abuse and the time the abuse is realized, damage is done and longer is the road to healing.

The “forever factor” is an important phrase for everyone to know. Even if the abuse happened long ago, the victim may forever fear in her mind that the abuse will never be over. She may be always on guard – even wanting to super glue her vagina shut in order to make sure the abuse doesn’t happen again. Some victims convince themselves that they deserve what is happening to them – their body parts are unwanted because that is the attraction for the abuse. Personalities are distorted and the life the child should have had is obscure.

Victims may benefit greatly from reading “Stolen Tomorrows.” Levenkron encourages victims to seek help with their sexual abuse ordeal and offers experiences advice on finding the right therapist and getting all the benefits from “the talking cure.”

Not only will victims benefit from this revealing book, other professionals who deal with victims of sexual abuse will learn more about diagnosing and treating survivors. With Levenkron’s more than 30-years experience, the information provided is a valuable tool.  Friends and family members will learn ways to help the victim. The sexual abuse victim will need all the support if she is to confront the emotions, thoughts, ideas, moods, behaviors and, in some cases, the abuser.

Children deserve security and protection. Children need to be nurtured to become the person they are supposed to be. When this isn’t the case, it would benefit everyone concerned to have “Stolen Tomorrows” handy to know the signs before it steals another tomorrow for even one little girl.
