Fish Oil: The Natural Anti-Inflammatory by
Author: Joseph C. Maroon, M.D. and Jeffrey Bost, P.A.C.
ISBN 978-1-59120-182-3

Fish Oil is an excellent monograph that deserves to be widely read, especially by health care and nutrition professionals. In six well-researched, cogent chapters, Maroon and Bost clearly lay out the current information about fish oil, and why it is so important.
Maroon and Bost work together in neurosurgical practice and are both involved in neurosurgical research and education at the University of Pittsburg Medical Center and School of Medicine. Maroon is team neurosurgeon for the Pittsburg Steelers, and they have seen the benefits of fish oil in their personal lives and in professional practice.
Fish oil is beneficial because it contains omega 3 fatty acids, which are essential for health. Maroon and Bost explain how omega 3’s work in our bodies, why we need them and why we don’t get enough omega 3’s in our diets.
Sometimes it seems like omega 3’s are the magic health bullet, or the Fountain of Youth—there are so many claims about what taking fish oil can do for you. I tend to be skeptical, but most of the claims are actually true, and Maroon and Bost explain the research that proves it. They also show why fish oil is a better anti-inflammatory than non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, especially in light of recent recalls of anti-inflammatories such as Vioxx. Finally, they explain why fish oil is the best source of omega 3’s and how to make sure you get the best fish oil available.
This little book provides a well-researched, complete overview of the subject. It may be a bit technical for general audiences, but anybody who wants to know the facts about omega 3 fatty acids and fish oil will find it useful.
