"Something is drastically wrong with the way we think about health." Dr. Tefft, one of the country's leading health experts, "maintains that it is long past time to rethink health, healing, and longevity and begin approaching good health on a personal, individual and specific basis."
Who should know better than a board certified Naturopathic Drugless Physician? If one isn't tied to big Pharma's apron strings but longs for better health and states that the plan should be as individualized as we are, it was worth a read. I was not disappointed. The book was reported to take the guesswork out of weight-loss, healing and longevity. The book did more than that -- it motivated me.
First, I was presented with a "reality check." Dr. Tefft states that all disease "is diet-related" and "you are NOT what you eat." "Using pharmaceutical drugs to treat nutrition problems only weaken the body further" and "diet and nutrition have completely different meanings." I learned that "losing body fat does not guarantee better health," nor does more exercising guarantee better health. The most surprising news, "the government is NOT concerned about your best health interests when it comes to foods and supplements and environmental considerations."
Dr. Tefft states, "If the wellness approach in Your Personal Life was in general use, all directly-diet-related disease would no longer plague the human race."
Tefft explains that in the U.S., U.K., and Canada, among other countries, "there is an overwhelming epidemic of degenerative diseases," and "these serious yet common health problems include: weight gain, chronic fatigue, serious health crisis, those who suffer continuing, "tolerable" discomfort, those who just can't seem to manage a few excess pounds," and "those who are morbidly obese and at extreme medical risk." The "majority of conventional wellness/energy-promoting fat loss/antiaging approaches that are the most popular today are based on exceedingly imprecise beliefs and methodologies." The "generalized one-size-fits-all approach to health (or any) issues could be more unscientific or outdates - and it is to our greatest detriment." He goes on further to say that it is "an embarrassment, in the face of scientific truth." and "some call this problem "anti-science" or "junk science"."
Dr. Tefft offers that "the world is changing rapidly" and "we're leaving our good health behind." The life we lead now is so different than just a decade ago. We have more electronics, cell phones, computers, frozen foods, fast foods, microwaves, and altered environments (just to name a few), and it's called "progress." "As professor of medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, Jon Kabat-Zinn says, "Our whole society has ADD."
Dr. Tefft states, "We've become such a fast-paced, convenience first, instant gratification, limited free time, throw away obsessive ADD society that we've barely noticed the subtle changes in our lives that are turning into big problems." But, he realizes that "some of us have taken notice and are in fact aware of the toxic environment, improperly nourished/synthetically infused farming topsoil, additive-laden food processing, the hyper fast-living, pace, overwork, fast food, and the overall emphasis of convenience-centered quality as the priority over quality of life." However, "few people have ever made the direct connection between these stresses and their own measured core health status at the most meaningful level: their own bodies."
There are two diet-related disease -- indirect diet related disease which is "primarily caused by an infection or parasitic process whose severity is affected by the nutritional constitution of the body" and direct diet-related disease, which is "primarily caused by developing nutritional/toxic disturbances, also known as degenerative or chronic disease."
This isn't just another diet or nutrition book. It's a wealth of important information for those that want to be healthy and live longer. On pages 156-157, you will find a list of diseases that reportedly respond to "personalized nutrition." The list includes: fever, memory loss, back pain, AIDS, anger, mood swings, migraine headaches, tooth decay, joint swelling, and panic disorders. Until I read Dr. Tefft's book, I wasn't aware that I could find relief by changing my diet - a diet that fits me.
Not one doctor I have ever seen for Lyme disease ever inquired about my diet. I can only imagine that there are millions of suffering people walking around without the knowledge that a change in diet would improve their health. The dietary zones and the simple way to compute calories outlined in Your Personal Health makes the changes easy and it's all scientifically proven. This book could save your life.
Your Personal Life is the recipient of the Reader's Digest Health Awareness Award. And, on December 14, 2006, Dr. Greg Tefft will be interviewed on In Short Order which can he heard at www.highway2health.
