Mina Hamilton seems your typical teenage girl -- she shops, she goes to school, she has a quirky best friend, she wants to be part of the A list, her parents are vampires… wait a minute!
Mina Hamilton's making the hardest decision she'll ever make. She has just a few weeks to decide whether she wants to be a vampire, like her parents, or remain mortal. There's a lot at stake...literally!
If she remains mortal, the vampire council will remove all memory of her parents and she'll end up in some foster home. On the other hand, who wants to drink blood for the rest of their… for eternity. As you can imagine, it's a pain in the neck… (Okay, I'll stop).
Truthfully, Mina would rather hang out with her friends and ever-so-cute Nathan. Will he ask her to the prom? What's a vampire-to-be to do?
Kimberly Pauley's teen angst story is delightful. It's just quirky enough to be inviting and fun, without going totally over the edge into nonsense. Technically, all of the characters are well developed and the plot moves quickly. Pauley's narrative is witty and I laughed out loud, often. It's a true gem with an outrageous premise, and Pauley makes it work.
Pauley's done an excellent job of masking her true motive. The story is really a tale of love, family, loyalty, commitment, and acceptance -- all the things teens want and worry that they don't always have, even when they do. Mina is loveable, mature, brave with attitude, and believe it or not, she's the product of a good family, even if they are vampires.
Mina is such a strong character and the plot so much fun that she deserves her own series -- a cross between Buffy and Sabrina. A smart producer would jump on it.
