Author: Carol Barton

ISBN:  978-0-9627752-2-2

The Pocket Paper Engineer is a step-by-step instruction book for building pop-ups comprising 72 pages, hardcover with wire-O binding.

The Table of Content is very clear and the step-by-step directions are easy to follow.

My partner and I built the turtle on the “floating” platform by concentrating a little on this effortless task.

Carol Barton, a Paper Engineer, has filled Volume 2 of The Pocket Paper Engineer with her book with  projects and instructions, for young and old alike and it is perfect for a rainy or snowy day.

This clever book is a way to bond with your family.  It teaches children how to follow instructions and to improve their sense of perception. In addition, it enhances their imagination in perhaps creating other props and platforms.

The budding paper engineers will learn how to create floating platforms, such as platforms with windows and stacked platforms. They will also apprentice to construct the Props with Glued on Tabs such as cars and buildings.

A little more difficult is the Multi-Layered Props made simple with the easy to follow instructions.  You will build a butterfly, sceneries with layered variations such as flowers, trees and people.

There is an entire chapter devoted to Spiral Pop-Ups which you cut out for example along a black hose, cutting round and round until you reach the hose’s center.

Another chapter is devoted to Straddle Pop-Ups which at this point can be mastered with ease, after you try all the other projects.

There is also a chapter filled with web resources, bookbinding suppliers as well as decorative paper suppliers.

Carol Barton has been teaching classes in paper engineering and the book arts for over twenty-five years. She is on the faculty of The University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Her artists’ books are exhibited internationally and are in numerous collections.

Carol Barton was helped with the illustrations by Eleni Smitham, a part-time illustrator and ballerina-in-training, and a full-time 6th grader. She also holds a position as Carol’s studio apprentice.

The Pocket Paper Engineer is a highly recommended activity for all.
