Barbara Delinsky’s Suddenly brings together a wide variety of characters with diverse personalities.  Skillfully she brings out the inner feelings that make each individual character tick.  She makes the reader feel the raw emotion as each new discovery and each unexpected tragedy develops throughout the storyline.

Four young and successful pediatricians have done well in the opening and continued growth of their joint-practice in the small and close-knit community that is Tucker, Vermont.  They each have their own private reasons for leaving the big cities behind to create new homes and lives in a small town that boasts quite country living along with an incorrigible Mount Court private school.  However, the unit begins to break apart when one of the doctors mysteriously dies of carbon monoxide poisoning in her own automobile parked in her own garage.

Unanswered questions start the wheels turning as the remaining members of the group try to solve the mystery behind the death of their most talented and seemingly most stable co-worker.  Was it suicide, accidental death, or something more sinister that snuffed the live of their esteemed colleague, Mara O’Neill?

Mara’s death seems to become the snowball that rolls down the hill of the practice’s instability, building and growing as each of the group’s private lives begin to fray around the edges.  As Mara’s colleagues, Paige, Peter, and Angie struggle to come to terms with her death, new developments in their own lives threaten to break apart their practice and send them all pin-wheeling away from a central force that had been holding them together for so long.

Paige, young, single and with no thoughts of marriage or family suddenly finds herself the caretaker of a tiny baby girl orphan from India, an unwed mother, and the unhappy daughter of the new head of Mount Court private school.  To add insult to injury she unwillingly finds herself attracted to the most obnoxious individual in town—the new head of Mount Court.

Level-headed and take-charge Angie suddenly discovers that her well ordered marriage has been a sham for eight long years as her husband and fourteen year old son begin to rebel against the walls of the prison that have become their life.  Angie’s horror at the realization that she may well have destroyed her marriage becomes palpable.

Peter, the only one of the group who was born in Tucker and had returned for reasons of his own, suddenly faces his own demons that threaten to destroy the image that he has worked so hard to build—an image of being the most self-confident and reliable professional in the field of pediatrics.  Peter becomes the focus of outrage when he is accused of unspeakable crimes against the very, young people that he is charged to protect.

You won’t want to miss this remarkable story and discover the mystery behind the mastery that is SUDDENLY.
