Authors name: Shane Gericke
Publisher: Pinnacle Books
ISBN: 0-7860-1814-3
Shane Gericke is the author behind the crime thriller, Blown Away, which became a national bestseller within just three weeks after hitting the shelves. Now Gericke, a founding member of International Thriller Writers Inc and also a member of the Mystery Writers of America amongst his many other literary achievements, has published his next novel about a serial killer and the dreaded electric chair.
To call this crime fiction exciting is exactly what it is. From the first opening chapter you’re gripped, clutching the pages and reading on. A madman has taken a liking to killing innocent people and then carving precise incisions on the victim’s body. Some cops are puzzled by these strange acts but Martin Benedetti, Detective Commander for Naperville sheriff’s office, and local detective Emily Thompson are not shocked . Two years ago they solved a brutal case of serial killer, Corey Trent, who murdered a pregnant woman cutting open her womb and tearing the baby out, killing her child. The killings were so violent they would leave imprints in Martin and Emily’s minds forever.
However Corey is to meet his fate on the electric chair and when other killings start to happen, one of which is based in Naperville, they both question if it could be connected with Trent? As these twists and turns begin to be unravelled in this spine-tingling tale, both of the detectives find themselves in love with each other, but with murders to solve, time is ticking away fast. Martin and his co-worker must learn to push aside their growing love in order to save even more people from the cold hands of death.
Corey Trent strikes you as a vile and heartless man. This much is pretty clear to the reader as you learn about his killings and get inside his mind. He struck me as a violent and repulsive character whose nature is sure to make you feel sick. For that I think Gericke deserves credit as his skill at creating these monsters is impressive. He also has a keen eye for detail.
Although I think this is a brilliant book, especially for fans of this genre, I found it a very confusing read as well. The characters and their actions are puzzling sometimes and also the continual skipping from one scene to the next is quite irritating. This may annoy some readers or others may feel it gives this book a bit more depth, personally I didn’t feel this was needed. The chapters are short and the way the author describes things can be complicated in places. For readers who prefer a more basic crime book, I wouldn’t recommend this but for others who are a bit more astute - get yourselves this absorbing volume.
I’d like to see this book follow the author’s first thriller and become a best seller.
