Mark Peter Hughes has created this adorable plot that is ‘I AM THE WALLPAPER”. The setting is a coastal village, near a beautiful cove .    His main character, Floey,  is the insecure sister to flamboyant Lillian. On the cusp of her teenage years, she feels she is so insignificant that she disappears into  the wallpaper. Nonetheless, she has a “best” friend, Azra and is attracted to 3 boys simultaneously. Her budding sexuality does not know how to entice them.    

She confides in her diary her resolve to change and be finally noticed . Drawing from the power within she tries to perfect Zen or the Art of Being.

Unfortunately her “invited” bratty young cousins do not feel very welcome by  Floey who cherishes her privacy. Floey will fall  victim to techno gossip! However, Feisty Floey has more than one trick in her bag!

The author, Mark Peter Hughes,  has undoubtedly a fondness for children. As he mentions at the end of the book, “He attributes his ability to write from a female perspective to growing up in a house dominated by – an extroverted mother and two wildly verbal sisters who rarely showed any shyness about expressing whatever was on their minds.” His characters are very well developed and credible to the point that you do not want to put down such an engaging story. 

I AM THE WALLPAPER is a funny, action packed page turner. Teens and grown-ups will enjoy this affectionate and universal portrait of the uncertainties that plague the adolescent years.

Something has to be said also about the elegant book design by Trish Parcell Watts. It is perfect!
